Neil Freedman is one of the founding partners of Silver & Freedman and Chair of the firm's Litigation and Dispute Resolution Department. Neil has over 40 years of experience representing clients in both trial and appellate litigation. He has been actively involved in alternative dispute resolution forums, arbitrations and mediations, and has had training as, and served as, both a mediator and arbitrator. Neil has litigated business and commercial disputes among individuals, corporations and partnerships in matters involving contracts, business fraud, embezzlement, sales and acquisitions, guarantee and surety issues, leases, landlord and tenant disputes, fraudulent conveyances and enforcement of judgments. His clients range from national companies to individual professionals and business people. He has litigated matters on behalf of clients in retail sales, manufacturing, construction, food, medical service and health care industries as well as the professional service sector.
Neil is also highly experienced in the practice of family law. He negotiates and drafts premarital agreements, domestic partnership agreements, as well as handling all marital dissolution issues, divorce settlements, divorce trials and post-judgment matters. He also has experience litigating high conflict and/or complex financial issues, custody issues, support issues, breach of fiduciary duty and all other issues involved in divorce. Neil works closely with his clients, which include high-profile individuals, entertainers and sports professionals and others. He has been a member of the family law section of the Los Angeles County Bar Association for over 35 years, has served as a volunteer mediator for the Los Angeles Family Law Department and has been recognized by the Los Angeles Superior Court in that regard. Neil has also been able to utilize his knowledge and experience in family law and conflict resolution strategies to resolve family law disputes for many of his clients.
Neil has lectured in the field of business litigation among closely held corporations and has conducted seminars on avoiding business litigation as well as business dispute resolution. He is a member of the Los Angeles Trial Lawyers Association, the Los Angeles County Bar and Century City Bar Associations. He has also been named to the list of Southern California Super Lawyers by Los Angeles Magazine, an honor bestowed on only 5% of the lawyers in Southern California.
Neil has served as a Volunteer Small Claims Court Judge, as an arbitrator and mediator for the Los Angeles County Bar Association Attorney-Client Relations office on several matters and as a private mediator in various cases.
Neil received his J.D. from Loyola University School of Law in 1970, where he was a member of the Loyola Law Review. He received his B.A., in political science, from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1967. In 1975, along with Perry Silver, he founded Silver & Freedman.
Neil describes himself as a "gym junkie," and can be found lifting weights or running on the treadmill at his favorite gym. When not pumping iron, he takes out his aggressions on a little white golf ball and claims to maintain a respectable handicap at his Country Club. In addition to his love of traveling, fine food, and fine wine, Neil has been happily married for over 40 years and has two children, a son-in-law, who is also a litigator and partner at a major California law firm, and two beautiful granddaughters.
